Post-doc position for Electrochemical Ammonia Production at The VILLUM Center for the Science of Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals

VILLUM FONDEN have granted 150 million DKK over the next 8 years to “The Villum Center for the Science of Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals” (V-SUSTAIN). The clear aim of the centre is to phase out fossil fuels and thereby alleviate the negative impact the continuous use these have on the earth’s climate and environment. This post-doc must focus at electrochemical production of ammonia although thermal reactions may also be considered. Today, aAmmonia is today produced in large industrial complexes, with fossil resources being the major energy source. This process alone constitutes 1% of the human related energy production and is essential for our food production. It is envisioned that this process in the future must be driven by renewable energy sources - primarily electricity - and we therefore want would like to investigate whether this is possible through an electrochemical process. This would allow for a decentralized production, closer to ambient conditions, thus emulating as nature is capable of doing it. A significant part of V-SUSTAIN takes place at Experimental Surface and Nanomaterials Physics at the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Here we enjoy a social, open and transparent scientific environment. The students will be able to take full advantage of the large number of personnel working in adjacent fields of investigation, from surface science on single crystals to the testing of high surface area catalysts in reactors. The work will be focused on the synthesis, testing and characterisation of new catalysts using state of the art in-house facilities or synchrotrons at SLAC or Lund. It relies heavily on a close collaboration between theory and experiment, where the most promising catalysts are identified by in-silico screening. This project will be in collaboration with other partners of V-SUSTAIN, at DTU and at Stanford University. Qualifications The successful candidates will have obtained excellent grades in his/her Bachelor and Masters degrees. He/she should also be well-motivated, hardworking and willing and able to work as part of a team. Candidates for the post-doc position should have a PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science and extensive experience with electrochemistry. Knowledge of analytical chemistry would also be an advantage. Salary and appointment terms The salary and appointment terms of the Post-doc position will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.The period of employment is 2 years. The positions are available from Summer 2016, but the starting date can be as late as December 2016.
