A 3-year PhD position is open. The PhD will be part of the Intervention project Healthy Kids programme The PhD is co-financed and will be conducted at the Division of Nutrition, The National Food Institute at the Technical University of Denmark and at Health Promotion Research, Steno Diabetes Centre. Supervisors: Professor Inge Tetens, Post Doc Marianne Sabinsky, Researcher Maria Bruselius-Jensen, and Professor Bjarne Bruun Jensen. Background Childhood represents an important life stage for the development of healthy nutritional behaviour and physical active life style. The school has been recognized as an important setting for health promotion. Health promotion research identifies participation as crucial to the development of empowerment and sustainable health changes. Project objective Healthy Kids programme The project aims at improving the dietary habits, physical activity levels and wellbeing of Danish school children aged 8-12 years by improving the dietary quality of packed lunches and between meal-snacks and enabling increased physical activity during school hours. For this purpose a multicomponent school and family-based intervention targeted the children, their parents and teachers, is conducted in selected schools. The study population will include 10 schools and 750 school children. The specific objectives are to: - develop a targeted and sustainable intervention with school children, parents and teachers as the target groups with school and families as settings. - quantify the effects of the intervention with regard to dietary habits, physical activity and wellness of school children. - investigate the effect of the intervention with regard to awareness and empowerment of school children in relation to nutrition and physical activity. - explore the long term effects of the intervention on dietary habits, physical activity and wellness. Project description/PhD focus The PhD project will focus on awareness and empowerment of school children in relation to nutrition and physical activity. The PhD student will develop and test participatory approaches to involve both children and families in the process of developing and implementing strategies to promote healthy food intakes and increased physical activity. Health policies will likewise be a central tool. The data analyses will be based on educational theories and health promoting effects will be based on the concept of Health Literacy. Qualifications Candidates should have a master''s degree in Public Health, education or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master''s degree. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. Salary and appointment terms The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.
