A PhD Scholarship in Population Genetics (eDNA) is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date October 2015. The project will be carried out in affiliation to the Section for Marine Living Resources’ population genetics research group in Silkeborg, Denmark. DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 120 academic employees. Project description Monitoring programs targeting commercial fish species and other key aquatic organisms are an important element in understanding the ecosystem dynamics and for implementing an effective management policy. Many classical marine monitoring programs are highly labour intensive, selective and costly to implement across large geographic regions. However, recent technological developments take advantage of water samples to potentially rapidly assess entire biological communities across taxonomic groups by retrieving bulk DNA and characterizing species composition using genetic ‘bar-coding’. It is predicted that this approach can become a significant supplement and advancement to how aquatic monitoring programs are conducted today. However, techniques applied today are still not able to accommodate high-throughput sampling or assessment of multiple species simultaneously. The project will focus on the development and testing of methods to filtrate environmental water samples and determine species compositions from retrieved DNA using high-throughput platforms. There will be specific focus on developing and testing approaches that can be applied in marine monitoring. The project will comprise work both on molecular development and field testing. The project will be carried out in the framework of a number of newly funded national and international (EU) multi-disciplinary projects. The applicant should therefore have an interest in working in an international atmosphere in the interphase between basic and applied research. Qualifications We are looking for a candidate who has: •Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Aquatic Science & Technology or similar •Experience in development of molecular tools to monitor species composition in environmental samples •Experience with physical oceanography and marine field work •Proficiency in written and spoken English •Keen interest in research within a field combining molecular tool development with aquatic sciences •Experience with array based quantitative PCR bar-coding methods will be advantageous Approval and Enrolment Scholarships for a PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the successful candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
