PhD project on: Assessment and Optimization Methods for Implementation of Energy Strategies in Communities

A PhD scholarship is available at Department of Civil Engineering (Section for Indoor Environment and Building Physics) at the Technical University of Denmark. The scholarship is sponsored in part by DTU through its partnership with other EuroTech Universities. Project outline Energy optimization at a community scale requires transformation of approaches which are suitable for individual buildings to communities by more than simply up-scaling the individual building solutions. This is realized in conjunction with a newly started International Energy Agency project “Implementation of Energy Strategies in Communities” (IEA EBC Annex 63), which focuses on how optimized energy strategies can be implemented at the scale of communities. This PhD-project will constitute a significant element in the Danish contribution to the IEA project. The PhD-project will use and refine tools which are developed in engineering based research projects such as the strategic research centre CITIES at DTU (Center for IT-Intelligent Energy Systems in Cities), such that they can be used for optimization and policy adaptation in conjunction with the specific needs expressed by decision makers, stakeholders and individual users in communities. Central elements of the PhD-study will be scenario analysis of community energy systems and attempts to develop a standardized methodology for application of technological instruments, user influence and behaviour in policy implementation. The PhD student will use Danish and international case studies in the form of specific communities to explore barriers and potential of practises, policies and regulation by monitoring and analysing the overall energy system at a community scale. The PhD-project will be an instrumental activity to constitute the link between the IEA project’s Subtask A, Energy strategies for Communities – Methodology and Subtask C, Case Studies. The activity is framed by the IEA project’s Subtask B, Planning Process, and Subtask D, Information exchange and dissemination in which results from this PhD-project will be used. The PhD-project is also an activity in the cooperation among EuroTech universities, where it will be coordinated with other smart city technology and planning research carried out with the partner universities: TU Munich, EPFL Lausanne, and TU Eindhoven. Partners in the Danish part of the IEA project are Cenergia Energy Consultants and Aalborg University, Department of Development and Planning. Supervisors (to be chosen among): Carsten Rode, Bjarne W. Olesen, Jakub Kolarik and Alfred Heller, DTU Department of Civil Engineering. Qualifications Candidates should have a master''s degree in civil or mechanical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master''s degree in engineering. In addition, candidates should be confident in English. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
