A 3-year PhD fellowship is available in the Biomolecular regulation group at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
The PhD position is funded by a Sapere Aude starting grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

The position start date is 1 June 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Scientific environment
The Biomolecular regulation group is led by Associate Professors Sine Lo Svenningsen and Michael Sørensen. The group addresses fundamental regulatory and mechanistic aspects of bacterial gene expression and growth regulation. A common interest among the group members is the role of RNA molecules as regulators and mediators of protein synthesis. The group belongs to the Section for Biomolecular Sciences at the Department of Biology. The section currently employs about 15 PhD students and 10 postdoctoral fellows. The research in the section is highly interdisciplinary ranging from molecular cell biology to protein chemistry, advanced biophysics and computational biology.
The Department of Biology is the largest department at the University of Copenhagen and hosts research programs and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. University rankings typically place the field of biology/biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen first in Denmark and among the top 30 universities internationally. The successful candidate will be enrolled at the PhD School of Science.

Project
The PhD project focuses on how the levels of tRNA and related RNA molecules impacts E. coli’s growth physiology and connects the translational machinery to other parts of the regulatory network responsible for controlling cell growth. The project will involve methods from RNA biology/biochemistry, transcriptomics, bacterial growth physiology, genetics and molecular biology.

Assessment criteria
In the assessment of qualifications we will emphasize the perceived research potential of the applicant and the relevance of previous research experience.
We are looking for a candidate with the following professional and personal qualifications:

• An educational background focused on the molecular biology of bacteria
• Consistent high scores in courses and projects throughout the BSc and MSc studies
• A strong interest in the research questions addressed by the group
• Documented laboratory experience within molecular microbiology, especially RNA biology/biochemistry
• Well-developed collaborative skills
• Strong motivation to contribute to a working environment that is both productive and pleasant for all members of the group
• Fluency in spoken and written English
• Skills in analysis of high throughput sequencing results is an advantage

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biomedicine or Biophysics with very good results and should have good English skills. In case of an exceptionally qualified applicant who holds a BSc degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biomedicine or Biophysics the fellowship could be arranged under the “Integrated Msc and PhD Scheme” described below.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 322,642 including annual supplement (+ pension of DKK 44,567 per year). Negotiation for a salary supplement is possible.

The main place of work will be at Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen at Nørre Campus, Ole Maaløes Vej 5, 220 Copenhagen N, Denmark.

Integrated MSc and PhD Scheme
The position is also available for candidates who are (or are eligible to be) enrolled at one of the faculty’s master programmes in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biomedicine or Biophysics. The duration of the integrated programme depends on the amount of credits that you have passed on your MSc programme. Scholarship and terms of employment for integrated MSc and PhD
PhD grant portions
In the period up to the completion of the MSc programme (up to three years), the student is enabstractJV_titled to so-called PhD grant portions. The grant portions are financed by the grant donor but not by the Danish State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme Agency (as is the case for the ordinary study grant portions on the BSc and MSc programmes). They are called PhD grant portions because this kind of remuneration is regulated and described in the Executive Order on the State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme in Denmark, and because the value of a PhD grant portion corresponds to the value of an ordinary Danish study grant portion. Students are awarded 48 PhD grant portions during the period of their MSc and PhD studies.
48 PhD grant portions at DKK 6,166 each, corresponding to DKK 295,968 (approx. €39,462).

'Duty work'
As a supplement to the PhD grant portions, the student may, in accordance with the collective agreement of the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC), be offered 'duty work'. In the period up to the completion of the MSc programme, students performing 'duty work' are paid by the hour. UCPH has decided to offer students on integrated MSc and PhD schemes 150 hours of 'duty work' per year during Part A of the programme (until two years of the combined programme of study remain). 'Duty work' during Part A if it has a duration of three years: 450 hours at a rate of DKK 214.16 (+ 12.5% holiday pay), corresponding to DKK 108,418.50 (approx. €14,450)

Salary in accordance with the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC)
In the period after the completion of the MSc programme, the student is employed as a PhD scholar and is remunerated in accordance with the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The scheme is arranged in such a way that students graduate from the MSc programme at a time when there are two years left of the integrated programme. For this reason, the salary must be paid for a period of two years in accordance with the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The amounts specified include a supplement locally agreed upon as well as pension contributions: Salary as a PhD scholar: 24 months at a rate of DKK 30,600 (including pension contributions and supplement), corresponding to DKK 734,420 (approx. €97,900).
