The Section for Proton Conductors at DTU Energy at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a qualified and highly motivated candidate for a PhD scholarship in development of fuel cell catalysts without noble metals. The section is involved in the development of both fuel cells and electrolyzers in the temperature range 80–400 °C. Within fuel cells based on phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole, we are among the leading research groups in the world. Alkaline electrolysis is a more recent field under expansion within the group. The research approach is experimental. The research and development activities take place in close collaboration with industry, e.g. Danish Power Systems and IRD Fuel Cells. Furthermore, there is a comprehensive collaboration with other companies and universities all over the world. You will be joining a large group consisting of about 25 scientists and technicians plus a number of students at different levels. You will be working in modern, well-equipped laboratories in a truly international setting where approximately half of the staff is from outside Denmark. Responsibilities and tasks The scientific work covers synthesis and characterization of new catalyst materials for the acidic environment in a polymer fuel cell. The project is carried out in collaboration with other research groups in Denmark, Canada and China and the work will involve the following: •Synthesis of catalyst materials by different techniques including high temperature autoclave synthesis •Electrochemical characterization by means of rotating disk electrodes •Analysis by XPS, XRD, BET, etc. •Imaging by electron microscopy •In situ testing in fuel cells It is optional to pay visits to the partners in Canada and China. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
