PhD scholarship in Chiral Magnetism from Mean field Theory

A unique research position is available at the Theoretical Atomic-scale Physics section (CAMD), department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The section has a strong tradition for developing and implementing new methodology within electronic structure theory and always aims at pushing the boundaries for applications within the field. Project description The interplay between exchange interactions and spin-orbit coupling, gives rise to a new kind of effective electronic interaction known as Dzyaloshinskiii-Moriya (DM) interactions. The DM interaction favours neighbouring spins to be canted and may lead to spin spirals in one-dimensional systems and magnetic vortices (skyrmions) in two- and three-dimensional systems. In the present project, the successful candidate will apply Density Functional Theory to study DM interactions from first principles. In particular, with respect to the properties of magneto-electric coupling and skyrmions in real materials. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental groups at DTU, who are performing neutron scattering measurements on the relevant magnetic materials. Responsibilities and tasks The candidate is expected to have a strong background in theoretical solid state physics. Programming skills, in particular with Python, will be an advantage. The tasks in the project include: •Implement the necessary non-collinear spin formalism into the electronic structure code GPAW •Calculate the DM interactions and obtain the magneto-electric response properties from first principles. (Collaboration with neutron scattering experiments) •Calculate the topological properties of spin-fields with DM interactions directly from mean-field theory In the course of the project, the candidate will become an expert in DM interactions and spin-orbit coupling from first principles. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
