The sections of dynamical systems and scientific computing at Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (DTU Compute), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is seeking a PhD student for a 3-year Scholarship in the field of modeling and simulation of supercontinuum lasers for Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) systems operating in the mid-infrared. The position is funded by the project “Low nOISE supercontinuum sources for ultra-high resolution 800nm optical coherence tomography for glaucoma diagnosis” (LOISE). The project is conducted in cooperation with the Fiber Sensors & Supercontinuum Group at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering at DTU and involves PhD students, post docs and scientists at DTU Fotonik, DTU Compute and the company NKT Fiber Technology. In the LOISE project we address the medical problem glaucoma suffered by 60 million people worldwide, making glaucoma the second leading cause of blindness. Our main aim is to improve screening modalities using fast noninvasive Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Focus is on improving resolution through supercontinuum generation in nonlinear optical fibers. Ultra-high resolution OCT (UHROCT) can be achieved by using tapered nonlinear optical fibers for supercontinuum laser light generation. However, this method suffers from intensity noise, which needs to be substantially reduced. LOISE will develop supercontinuum sources with unprecedented low noise and Gaussian shaped power spectra that are optimal for use in UHROCT systems at 800 nm.. The current PhD project shall provide a theoretical and a high performance computational foundation for design of UHROCT tapered fibers. The project shall develop for modern many-core hardware efficient and robust mathematical and computational methods for accurate high spectral resolution simulations of pico second pumped supercontinuum generation in nonlinear optical fibers. The supercontinuum modelling is based on the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (GNLSE), which includes loss, higher-order dispersion, frequency-dependent nonlinearity, the delayed Raman response, and self-steepening, and can adequately describe supercontinuum generation in nonlinear optical fibers. Noise is included on the input by the standard one-photon-per-mode random phase noise model. The PhD student shall develop a numerical model based on state-of-the-art Spectral Methods or possibly alternative high-order numerical methods. Implementation uses modern massively parallel programming paradigms, such as MPI and OpenCL, to run efficiently for any problem size on modern and emerging many-core hardware, including accelerators, such as Graphical Processing Units, GPUs, that in recent years have contributed to the opening an entirely new arena for massively parallel computations on desktop size systems for many scientific applications. Responsibilities and tasks The selected PhD student will participate in a project team of 1 postdoc and 2 PhD students hired specifically on the project, in addition to the participating senior staff. The student will specifically be in charge of a theoretical and a high performance computational foundation for design of UHROCT tapered fibers. The student is thus expected to •Develop mathematical models of supercontinuum generation in tapered and nonlinear optical fibers based on an extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation. •Develop numerical software for high performance computing on modern and emerging many-core hardware, e.g. using high-throughput architectures such as graphical processing units. •Interact with DTU Fotonik, the company NKT Photonics A/S, Université de Franche-Comté, Besancon, France, and other relevant international partners.
