DTU Electrical Engineering seeks qualified candidates for two PhD positions. Candidates are invited to apply for a specific project from the list below: 1. Functional Modeling of water treatment system. The purpose of this PhD project is to develop functional models (Multilevel Flow Model, MFM) of water treatment plants in off-shore oil and gas platforms. The functional models will include the physical process and its control system and should be cross validated against 1) first principles physical models and control algorithms using simulations and 2) information from risk analysis (HAZOP) studies as well as expertise available from plant operators. 2. Combining functional modeling and reasoning with on-line event analytics The purpose of this PhD project is to develop methods for identification and analysis of system failures by combining function (Multilevel Flow Model, MFM) based cause-consequence reasoning with BigData algorithms for on-line event analytics. The methods should be demonstrated on a water treatment pilot plant. The two projects are conducted as a co-operation between the Danish Hydrocarbon Technology Centre (DHRTC) at DTU and other Danish Universities. The projects are cross-disciplinary, and the PhD students are expected to enter into a dynamic interaction with the other partners. Applicants should document a general background in control engineering, process control or process engineering, including experience in software development. A supplementary interest or background in AI (artificial intelligence) would be preferred for the candidates applying for project no. 2 (the BigData project). The projects are part of a larger research and development activity on Multilevel Flow Modelling at DTU which include industrial partners and international research groups. The overall objective of the activity is to enable and assist operational decision support in order to increase overall production, safety, situational awareness and effectiveness of operator decisions in complex industrial systems. Qualifications Candidates should have a MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering. Candidates with competences in the specific project topic will be preferred. Approval and Enrolment PhD scholarships are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
