The Microsoft Quantum Program announces an remarkable opportunity to work with an international team to build a topological quantum computer, in cooperation with the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI), in Copenhagen, Denmark, the birthplace of quantum physics. The Microsoft/NBI Research program is one of the locations for the overall Microsoft Quantum program along with sites in Lyngby (Denmark), Delft (Netherlands), Sydney (Australia), Purdue, UC Santa Barbara, and Redmond (USA).

 

For this position, we are seeking a Senior Research Scientist who can co-supervise a team of experimental researchers and engineers, carry out and oversee experiments, engage with theoretical physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, work closely with academic researchers and students, and work across sites. A successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Coordinating and performing low-temperature experiments exploring hybrid superconductor-semiconductor hybrid materials and devices for topological quantum computing.
• Develop measurement infrastructure requirements for program-wide adoption.
• Coordinate resources within the Microsoft Quantum program
• Test and characterize quantum computing devices at millikelvin temperatures using low noise/RF measurement techniques.
• Use and enhance custom data acquisition software and analysis data.
• Develop microwave and RF measurement techniques.
• Develop experimental procedures to optimize materials and device performance.
• Assist in optimizing design of quantum computing devices.
• Coordinate with materials growers and nanofabrication staff to optimize workflow, device and material optimization.

Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare and perform solid state quantum experiments based on novel material systems.
• Data acquisition using RF and DC measurement techniques, data analysis and interpretation.
• Operate and maintain a suite of dilution refrigerators.
• Provide feedback to the nanofabrication and material developer for device and material optimization.

 

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in low-temperature condensed matter physics experience in related areas of research, including low-dimensional semiconductors, superconductivity, experimental quantum information.
• 4+ years hands-on experience with measurements of solid state or quantum information devices.
• 4+ years experience with one or more of: low noise transport experiments, RF or microwave techniques, cryogenic techniques (dilution refrigerator), and metrology (SEM, atomic force microscope, ellipsometer, four probe resistivity) equipment, variable temperature electrical characterization (for semiconductors, dielectrics, and superconductors), data acquisition and programming (python, matlab).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills
• Strong desire to work in a collaborative international team – periodic travel to other Microsoft Quantum laboratory sites will be required
