The Department of Management Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the area of sustainable management and health promotion in food manufacturing industry, starting ideally October 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter in 2018.

The position is a joint collaboration between Danish Crown A/S and DTU where the PhD student will be part of the division of Management Science (MS) at DTU's Management Engineering Department. MS is an internationally unique academic environment spanning from operations research and operations management to management of human factors and performance in implementation processes. The position is affiliated to the Implementation and Performance Management Group (IPM) group that aims to advance knowledge in the areas of implementation of new technology and work processes, integrating perspectives of both organizational performance and employee well-being (as both target and outcome) and sustainable management of production systems.

As work and work places, become ever more complex and diverse, sustainable management i.e. to ensure both employee well-being and organizational performance, play a key role. In the IPM research group, we have a long tradition for studying organization and management of work processes and implementing new work-related changes. Our research has focused on occupational health and safety management, physical and psychosocial work environment and work organization and implementation of preventive interventions to ensure both organizational performance and employee well-being in manufacturing, healthcare and knowledge work. With this job, we invite applicants for a PhD position to develop this field focusing on how to develop and manage work processes and organizations and ensure a good work environment and health while also taking into account the organizational performance and the continuous development of the daily operations.

This PhD project will be supervised by associate Professor Christine Ipsen and Senior researcher Kasper Edwards with Director of Global Health & Safety Morten Pedersen as the contact person at Danish Crown.

Responsibilities and tasks

The main challenge in this PhD project is to reduce the level of absenteeism in food manufacturing. The project should provide a thorough understanding of the potential organizational and managerial causes to the current differences in absenteeism across five different pork abattoirs. This understanding should be leveraged to explore how sustainable management, i.e. taking both employee well-being and organizational performance, can be implemented across the different sites in Danish Crown.

The purpose of the PhD project is to identify organizational and/or managerial causes to differences in absenteeism and is explorative in its nature. The PhD project aims to bridge sustainable management and health promotion in food manufacturing. The PhD project should include studies of:

• Differences and variation in management, leadership and teamwork and how they are associated with absenteeism across the five sites and the performance outcomes.
• Local site differences in the organization and management of the core tasks and if that can explain the differences in absenteeism.
• Whether demographic differences among the employees can explain differences in absenteeism
• The prerequisites for successful implementation of sustainable management i.e. to ensure both employee well-being and organizational performance across the five sites.

Danish Crown's own data regarding psychosocial work environment and well-being, performance, absenteeism forms the basis for the PhD project. The study might also include questionnaires and qualitative data collection methods (interviews, workshops and observations).

• Work in close collaboration with researchers from the Management Science Division
• Present your work at international conferences and seminars
• Discuss exciting research with MS colleagues at weekly research meetings

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
