DTU Aqua, Section for aquaculture invites applications for a position as researcher in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) with specific focus on microbial communities and characterization of microbial processes within RAS and associated End-Of-Pipe treatment.

DTU Aqua - National Institute of Aquatic Resources - is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Our mission is to conduct research, provide advice, educate at university level, and contribute to innovation in sustainable exploitation and management of aquatic resources. The goal is to be a leading international institute in marine sciences, fisheries, and aquaculture, addressing environmental consequences and interactions of human activities in the aquatic environment and resolving long-standing conflicts between aquatic resource exploitation and conservation.

Section for Aquaculture conducts research within biological and technological aspects of aquaculture. Our main research themes are i) Rearing systems and farming technology in particular related to recirculating aquaculture systems, and ii) Fish nutrition and fish physiology. Both topics aim at improving production efficiency and reducing environmental impact to improve performance and sustainability (economically and environmentally) of aquaculture.

Section for Aquaculture is part of a strong national and international network within the field of aquaculture. We attract worldwide researchers, postdocs and PhD-students, in an international environment closely collaborating with research groups within DTU as well as many other national and international research institutions.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

Responsibilities and tasks


The researcher will be responsible for research in microbiology and bacterial communities as well as their processes in RAS and related End-Of-Pipe treatment.

The research activities will include the following areas:

• Microbiota/microbial community dynamics within RAS compartmentsMicrobial communities and dynamics in End-Of-Pipe treatment processes
• Relationship between microbial composition and microbial processes in RAS
• Microbial methods and technologies for improved nitrogen, phosphorous, and organic matter removal

The candidate must actively participate in innovative research proposals for external funding of the research at the Section for Aquaculture. The researcher is expected to build a strong national and international network in collaboration with colleges in the Section.

The candidate will also participate in supervision of students and co-supervision of PhD-fellows. Limited teaching with specific reference to the research area is also foreseen.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Additionally, the candidate should have:

• Knowledge and documented experience within sequencing and microbiota profiling
• Knowledge and experience with recirculating aquaculture systems in general and with biofilters and/or wastewater treatment in particular
• Proficiency in written and spoken English
• International research experience
• Interest in teaching and supervision of students
• Experience with field-related work at commercial fish farms is considered an asset

We expect the candidate to have specific expertise within microbiology and bioinformatics, as well as some experience with RAS, aquaculture operations, and field trials in general. The candidate is expected to have a strong theoretical background along with an applied approach, often participating in industrial collaborations.

Salary and terms of employment


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed on with the relevant union.

The position is available from September 1, 2019 or according to mutual agreement.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment.

DTU Aqua - National Institute of Aquatic Resources - has about 300 employees, of whom a third are scientific staff. The other employees are assistant biologists, laboratory technicians, administrative staff, ship's crew, student assistants etc. The institute is organised into eight scientific sections, which carry out the research, educational and advisory activities. In addition, the institute has a number of scientific and administrative support functions, including the research vessel Dana. DTU Aqua has employees at DTU's campus in Lyngby and in Silkeborg, Hirtshals and Nykøbing Mors in Jutland as well as on board the research vessel Dana.
