Postdoctoral position in soil-plant interactions in permafrost-affected ecosystems in Greenland at Center for Permafrost

Center for Permafrost (CENPERM) at University of Copenhagen is recruiting a postdoctoral associate to work in the field of measuring plant root dynamics linked to rhizosphere soil, subsurface gas production and net gas exchange with the atmosphere. The project will focus on soil physics and biogeochemical processes in Greenland. The position is available from 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

CENPERM, a Center of Excellence co-funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and University of Copenhagen, is an interdisciplinary research center with a scientific focus on “climate – vegetation –soil – microorganism – permafrost” along transects across the major climate zones of Greenland (see http://www.CENPERM.ku.dk).

The center consists of about 25 permanent staff members from the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and Department of Biology. Some 15 PhD students and postdocs have been or are currently affiliated with the center.

Research project
This postdoctoral position focusses on interacting processes between microorganisms, plants and soils within soil profiles in contrasting arctic landscape and vegetation types and integrating biologically mediated gas fluxes linked to predicted climate change in Greenland. Part of the work will be related to the use of existing long-term ecosystem field manipulations of soil temperature, radiation, snow depth, water availability as well as the usage of minirhizotron technique for plant root dynamics monitoring, at Disko (West Greenland),

The postdoc is expected to work within a well-established research group and take part in co-supervising of PhD-students and take part in database management.

Qualifications
We specifically seek a candidate with documented knowledge and interest in field measurements, with hands-on experience from laboratory experimental set-up as well - preferable with experience with Arctic ecosystems.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. preferably in Earth or Biological Sciences and have a strong background in environmental soil biogeochemistry with documented research in soil interactions, preferably linked to greenhouse gas production/transport and plant root dynamics. Fluency in both written and spoken English is a requirement.

Salary and terms of employment
The place of work will be in Copenhagen. The position is for 24 months (with a possibility of extension) starting on 1 January 2019 or as early as possible thereafter.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 424.526 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.594). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
