Postdoc in Design, Construction, and Demonstration of Biogas Upgrading for Pure CO2 Production

Center for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE), Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) seeks a postdoc to work on our BioCO2 project. The proposed work will be conducted in collaboration between DTU Chemical Engineering and our partners Union Engineering and the Danish Gas Technology Center.

Denmark has a great need to substitute our declining North Sea gas production by cleaner alternative fuels. We have a current potential to substitute 10% of our oil, gas, and coal usage by sustainable biogas. Biogas is produced from biological resources like manure and waste water sludge. Untreated, it typically contains 30% to 40% CO2 and impurities. Biogas can be upgraded to bio-methane which permits distribution through the natural gas grid. However, in this process CO2 is produced and emitted into the atmosphere.

Responsibilities and tasks

The aim of the project is to demonstrate a mobile upgrading technology which is able to produce pure CO2, BioCO2, without impurities of sulphur, siloxane, ammonia, and other volatile components from biogas. The quality should be good enough for food, biofuel, medicine and welding purposes.

You will carry out test campaigns on a biogas upgrading unit, which is being built by Union Engineering, an experienced company in the field of technology on food grade CO2 production. The test unit is a mobile solvent-based CO2 capture unit with CO2 cleaning sections which must be mounted on a transportable rig. The test campaigns will be performed in at least two Danish sites for wastewater treatment and farmland biogas production.

You will be co-supervising PhD students and work in close collaboration with a person who will extend a simulation engine which you will use for biogas cleaning optimization. In a combined task of applying and developing the simulation and running the upgrading unit, the simulation will be performed in close collaboration with Union Engineering using Aspen Plus.

Your responsibilities will also include the preparation of reports for the funding agencies.

Objective and purpose of the project

The purpose of the project is to create and demonstrate a financially viable technology which will enable the upgrading of biogas to natural gas grid quality and simultaneously permit the reuse of the CO2 for other purposes, such as synthetic biofuel and food.

Project contents

The task will be to gain experience from existing CO2 capture demonstration technologies at DTU. You will gain knowledge from other researchers working in the same field of technology development. You are expected to apply existing knowledge from DTU and Union engineering and succeed in demonstrating a new low-energy solvent technology for CO2 capture.

Relation to other projects

You will be a member of the CERE research group. You will be working in close collaboration with Associate Professor Philip Fosbøl in your daily work. You can draw on years of experience and knowledge in CO2 capture technologies and pilot demonstration. The software tools you will need for this project are already available. Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree in chemical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the PhD degree in engineering. There will be a focus on your experience within unit operation and pilot testing, and on the number of publications you have created.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is for 2.5 years.
