DTU Space (the National Danish Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark) is offering a PhD scholarship in the area of transient astrophysics. The successful applicant will join a newly established group led by Dr. Giorgos Leloudas focusing on the study of transient phenomena in the Universe. We study all kinds of astrophysical transients, such as supernova explosions, with a particular interest on exotic phenomena, including superluminous supernovae, tidal disruption events and the zoo of nuclear transients, and the newly discovered electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves. We are part of and play an active role in various international collaborations and transient surveys, including ePESSTO, ENGRAVE and BlackGEM. In addition, we have access to and obtain data from the ESO facilities and the Nordic Optical Telescope.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated student to work at the cutting edge of this rapidly moving research field. You will be involved in the follow-up and analysis of exciting phenomena in the era of large scale transient surveys and of gravitational waves. You will engage in research by using advanced datasets from observations of transient objects at different wavelengths, and you will be trained in the use of tools such as the polarization of light and the study of the transient galactic environments, in order to shed light on the different aspects of stellar deaths. You will have the opportunity to participate and contribute to large collaborations and projects in an international environment.

Qualifications

Candidates should have (or should be about to obtain) a master's degree in physics, astronomy or engineering or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level. Applicants with previous experience in the mentioned areas of research, strong programming skills and knowledge relating to data reduction and analysis are especially encouraged to apply. Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU Space, as well as a natural interest in collaboration and personal responsibility. The successful applicant is encouraged to pursue independent research interests during the course of the PhD.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union with the relevant union with a minimum salary of $55,000 per year including pension. The scholarship includes funding for travel and IT.

The position is available for a 3-year period. The starting date is flexible between February and September 2019.
