PhD scholarship in Surrogate Models for Urban Flooding

DTU Environment herby invites talented young researchers who have obtained outstanding results during their MSc studies and who have demonstrated excellence and potential in their field of study, to apply for a PhD scholarship in the Urban Water Section at DTU Environment. Modelling of urban flooding has developed rapidly over the last decade and today modelling tools using 1D-2D simulations is commercially available. The models are still sensitive to boundary conditions and the calculation time prohibits their implementation in real-time control applications as well limits possibilities for exploring planning options. The group of researchers focusing on modelling of water flows and pollutants in storm water currently consists of two professor, one associate professor, three assistant professors and, one postdoc. The group employ both stochastic and deterministic models and focus on both planning and operation of urban drainage systems and the interactions between urban drainage systems and city planning in order to generate liveable cities, robust to climate change and other main drivers of changes of flood risk in cities. Responsibilities and tasks The overall aim of the PhD is to develop a suite of surrogate models with varying complexity. These models should then be tested, compared, and employed for applications covering both planning and operation of water flows in urban storm water systems. The project is not financed by a project but is closely linked to other projects carried out with both Danish and international partners. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
