Do you want to help develop innovative and environmentally friendly energy technologies for the future? The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage at DTU is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide cells – a technology for clean and efficient conversion of fuels into electricity and electricity into fuels. The solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is able to use electricity to split CO2 and H2O into CO, H2 and O2 with very high efficiency. The CO and H2 can be used to produce several types of synthetic fuels such as methane, DME or even diesel by use of suitable catalysts, in other words, excess electricity produced for example by wind turbines or solar cells can be converted to storable hydrocarbons and fuels using SOECs. For an overall high efficiency and lower costs of the system, it is desirable to operate the SOEC at elevated pressure. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD projects aim at a better understanding of the SOEC process using steam and CO2 with regard to performance and durability/lifetime limiting factors when operated under realistic conditions at ambient and elevated pressure. Topics include: •Development of new operating procedures optimized for pressurized cell and stack testing •Performance testing of State-of-the-art SOEC (cells and stacks) •Development of durability testing of State-of-the-art SOEC (cells and stacks) that represent realistic operating modes, both at ambient and elevated pressures •Study of life-time limiting parameters •Electrochemical characterization using e.g. i-V curves and impedance spectroscopy, including establishment of characteristic models •Post mortem analysis of cells and stacks using for example scanning electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
