The Biomedical Engineering group at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applicants for a 3-year PhD in sleep analytics using biomedical signal processing and machine learning of nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) signals and other data. 18 months will be spent at DTU in Denmark, the other 18 months at Stanford University in California, USA. The PhD is part of a long-standing collaboration between these Universities on this topic. Professors with experience in technical science and sleep medicine will closely supervise the student in both locations. In this position, you can expect to perform data analysis on tens of thousands of laboratory recorded sleep studies, in combination with pictorial, genetic and medical/questionnaire data. A sleep study, or PSG, is comprised of multiple digital signals (EEG, ECG, EOG, chin and leg EMG, breathing, oxygen saturation, etc.) recorded simultaneously throughout the night to provide physiological measures of human activity and behavior during sleep. You will be expected to transform these digital signals with various novel methods e.g. Wavelet Transforms, Hilbert-Huang Transform and Holo-Hilbert Spectral Analysis and to feed these to machine learning algorithms such as convolution networks and unsupervised learning algorithms, together with other signals and data. Responsibilities and tasks The purpose of the PhD project will be to design and implement a reproducible and well-documented analytical pipeline for the biomedical analysis and automatic interpretation of large samples of PSG sleep studies, clinical and genetic marker data. In the process, the candidate will discover new patterns within sleep that are predictive of human health, sleep disorders, brain diseases, and have a genetic basis, with isolation of the corresponding genetic factors. The pipeline aims to result in automatically scored PSG events that are representative of sleep apnea events; periodic leg movements during sleep, micro-arousals, or sleep stage changes. Automatic processing of some of these variables or their transformation will also provide diagnosis for specific sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and insomnia. The PhD student will work in a highly collaborative environment, carry out data analysis and integration, and apply best-in-class algorithms – and develop new algorithms – that directly address the motivating biological questions. Collaborations across other labs and across departments are encouraged. Qualifications Candidates should hold an MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering. Experience in advanced biomedical signal processing, programming, advanced mathematics, and a solid background in statistical analysis are needed. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with members of the research teams are essential to the success of the individual in this position.
