PhD scholarship in Situation-Aware Control Solutions for Enabling Smart Network Services

The Center for Electric Power and Energy at the Department of Electrical Engineering is looking for a PhD student for a 3-year scholarship in the field of situation-aware control solutions for enabling smart network services. The position is funded by the project “EnergyLab Nordhavn” that aims at utilizing the Danish metropolitan area Nordhavn as a live laboratory for future smart-energy technologies, innovative business models and new operational solutions on all scales - components, buildings, grid infrastructures and system level - and provide basis for design and dimensioning of the energy infrastructure of future sustainable dense low-energy cities. Responsibilities and tasks The selected PhD candidate will participate in a project team of DTU researchers, energy component manufacturers and utility engineers of “EnergyLab Nordhavn”. The candidate will research solutions that enable smart distribution network services through exploiting advanced situation-awareness and control of smart energy components such as building HVAC systems. The candidate will be involved in control algorithm design which is based on a seamless integration of different situation-dependent control behaviors to establish a control system that is robust and resilient. Specifically, it will involve integration of normal operation, handling of changes of external conditions e.g. change of grid topology and contingencies incl. loss of communication. The integrated solution must ensure a smooth transition between different operational conditions, different operating modes where each can provide network support service and disturbance immunity etc. In addition to carrying out desktop simulations and hardware prototype design, the project will include experimental verification using the EnergyLab Nordhavn facilities. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in modelling and control, power engineering, design and operation of distribution networks. Qualifications Candidates should have an MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering. Approval and Enrolment PhD scholarships are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general PhD programmes of DTU.
