DTU Nutech, the Radiation Physics Division, is seeking candidates for a PhD position to investigate the effect of failure of charge neutrality on the luminescence response of individual grains of quartz and feldspar. The Radiation Physics Division carries out research, innovation and research-based consultancy in the fields of luminescence physics, dosimetry and neutronics, with applications within e.g. geological and archaeological dating, radiation therapy, radiation processing, radiation protection and nuclear emergency preparedness. The division presently consists of approx. 35 people including researchers, technicians and PhD students. Background In the luminescence dating of geological and archaeological material dose distributions derived from individual sand grains are increasingly used to give insights into the degree of resetting of the luminescence signal prior to burial and any subsequent post-depositional mixing of deposits. However, this analysis depends on a good understanding of other sources of scatter in the dose distributions. A better understanding and quantification of the origins of grain-to-grain scatter will improve the reliability of single-grain luminescence dating. Job description The aim of this PhD is to investigate the effect of failure of charge neutrality on the luminescence response of individual grains of quartz and feldspar and its effect on the luminescence dating of geological and archaeological materials. This research is likely to involve e.g. deliberate induction of charge imbalance at the scale of individual grains, dose measurement using both luminescence and exo-electrons, and the effects of external electric fields on these measurements. It is anticipated that the resulting understanding will lead to more accurate and precise measurements of doses recorded by individual sand grains. Qualifications The successful candidate is expected to have a master’s or equivalent degree in experimental physics or physical chemistry although candidates with a geoscience background will be considered. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
