The Hearing Systems Group at the Department of Electrical Engineering seeks a qualified candidate for a 3-year PhD position.

Our research is concerned with auditory signal processing and perception, speech communication, audiology, behavioural and objective measures of auditory function, computational auditory neuroscience, environmental acoustics, and hearing-instrument signal processing. The goal of this research is to understand the functioning of the human auditory system and to provide insights that are useful for technical applications, such as speech recognition systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and hearing diagnostics.

The aim of the PhD project is to investigate behavioural and physiological measures of the processing of signals in complex acoustical environments. The auditory system makes use a number of signal properties that improve the detectability of a target in a noise masker. In modelling approaches, this is often interpreted as an 'internal signal-to-noise ratio'. The PhD project combines psychoacoustics with non-invasive electrophysiology and imaging methods to investigate objective correlates of the 'internal signal-to-noise ratio' of simple and complex sounds and to identify the physiological processing stages underlying the behavioural observations. The results of the project will contribute to objective measures of supra-threshold processing in human listeners and to improved diagnostics of hearing impairment.

You will become a member of an international team of researchers whose aim is to understand how basic neural mechanisms of hearing can be studied in animal models and in human listeners, and how complementary research techniques can be applied to gain understanding of the hearing system.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD candidate will use psychoacoustic tests, electrophysiological measures and imaging techniques to investigate individual responses to different types of masked signals. The behavioural data will be correlated with different physiological responses and source modelling.

The applicant should be well-versed in some scientific programming environment (MATLAB, Octave, SciPy) and should have knowledge of signal processing (e.g. electrophysiological and/or audio) and experimental design.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
