Postdoc in Mesoscale modeling for offshore wind resource and power calculations

The Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a candidate for a postdoc position in the field of mesoscale modeling for offshore wind resource and power calculations. The position is in the Resource Assessment Modelling Section (RAM). The section carries out research and modelling of mesoscale and boundary-layer meteorology.  The section’s focus  is on assessment wind conditions at site level, including resources, wakes, turbulence, extreme values, variability, and uncertainty, plus other relevant meteorological quantities, and to disseminate knowledge of such to the energy sector. The postdoc will focus on the use of a atmosphere-wave-ocean coupled modelling system for wind-to-power conversion studies for clusters of large offshore wind farms.
 
Responsibilities and tasks 
The postdoc will be working on the topic of air-sea interaction using mesoscale modeling. Specifically, the post doc will be running an atmosphere-wave-ocean coupled modelling system. The post doc will apply this system to investigate the impact of the sea conditions and wind farm wakes on the generation of wind energy into the power system. The purpose is to evaluate the importance of a series of sea conditions on offshore wind farm wake impacts while further developing a cost-effective modeling system.
 
The successful candidate will work with a team applying mesoscale models to wind energy problems, the postdoc will support different national and international research projects related to onshore and offshore wind conditions. This includes the modelling and validation of a collection of storm events in the North Sea in connection with extreme wind and wave estimation. The candidate will also apply the modeling system for coastal civil research and applications where both winds and waves matter. 
 
The successful candidate can also look forward to collaboration with other groups within the Wind Energy Department, in cross-disciplinary projects.
 
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.
 
Further qualifications

• Experience in mesoscale modelling for offshore research and applications
• Experience working with large datasets 

General

• Experience running models on large computer clusters
• Strong experience in Fortran 90, MPI and other programming languages such as Python, Matlab and Linux Shell
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
• Teamwork spirit

Optional

• Experience with wind-wave-ocean coupled modelling
• Experience with wind resource modelling, including WAsP and WEng software
• Experience using wind turbine wake models

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
