PhD scholarship in Coastal Offshore Winds, Ocean Waves and Currents using Remote Sensing

The physical interplay between offshore winds, ocean waves and currents in the coastal zone is still not properly understood; this impacts the accuracy of atmospheric and oceanic modelling and the retrieval of accurate wind information from radars. The combination of observations from several state of the art remote sensing technologies focused at the air-sea interactions in the coastal zone are expected to form basis for improved physical interpretation of the processes. This is important when modelling offshore winds for wind energy at the micro– and meso- scales. Responsibilities and tasks The proposed project aims at utilising a combination of remotely sensed measurements from satellites and ground-based instruments to map and study the physical properties and dynamics of the coastal zone. Part of the study will be based on a dataset for which satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical data as well as shore-based HF radar observing the coastal zone from land is available. Supplementary ocean buoy data, floating profiling wind lidar data and WindScanner lidar data will be available. The planned project will interact with several ongoing wave-wind projects focusing on the coastal zone, e.g. RUNE and X-WiWa. Qualifications Preferably the candidate should have a background in remote sensing, meteorology, ocean dynamics or similar and programming skills. Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The PhD study will include a mandatory 6 month research stay at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Korea at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), where expertise on the high frequency radar systems is available.
