DTU Management in cooperation with Energinet.dk invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position in "Advanced mathematical modelling related to comprehensive energy system models". The PhD is part of the FUTUREGAS project. Responsibilities and tasks Gas has a number of advantages seen from a system perspective: It is an efficient and highly flexible fuel to utilize, characterised by high ramping rates; it can be used by a wide number of applications including industrial processes, CHP and transportation; it is fairly easy to store especially in Denmark with two large storage facilities; and, finally, the climate impact is limited with low CO2 emissions from natural gas and none or even negative from gas based on renewable sources. Thus, gas is an excellent fuel for facilitating the challenging Danish transition towards an energy system independent of fossil fuels in the long term. The FutureGas project includes all major stakeholders of the Danish gas industry and the main purpose is to contribute to growth and green transition through interdisciplinary and coordinated research across the gas sector. The goal is to stimulate; 1) an efficient and economical supply of gas - including gas based on renewable sources, 2) an appropriate and flexible use of these gases, and 3) an optimal integration of gas in the overall energy system, including an energy and economic efficient interaction with heat, electricity, industry and transport sectors. The project will analyse the gas chain from supply to regulation: efficient production and use of green gases including potential conditioning to natural gas quality, flexible use of gas also for transport, system integration, as well as application of measures to ensure an economically efficient use of gas. As a key part of the project, Danish energy system models will be improved by including the comprehensive gas system, integration of green gas technologies, storage and smart use of gas, national and international transmission links, as well as improved mathematical modelling. In the PhD project complex mathematical problems connected to modelling of large integrated systems will be analysed and the work will act as a support function to the rest of the FUTUREGAS project by developing solutions to handle the large numbers of variables and equations imposed in large energy system models. The study must investigate sophisticated operations research methods to handle large and complex mathematical problems. The methods could include dynamic aggregation of variables and constraints to reduce the problem size. It could also be to develop tailored solution methods for the integrated gas modelling problem, e.g. decomposition methods, matheuristics or local search methods. Furthermore, uncertainties in gas modelling are of interest, especially how to handle uncertainties and avoid intractable mathematical problems due to e.g. a large number of scenarios. An analysis of performance and solution quality must be performed to ensure the best possible solution methods. The PhD project will be carried out under the supervision of Professors David Pisinger (DTU) and PhD Mette Gamst (Energinet.dk). Some traveling between DTU in Lyngby and Energinet.dk in Fredericia should be expected. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The applicant should have a strong background in Operations Research, documented by courses, MSc / BSc theses, or publications. Extensive programming experience and good English skills are expected. It would be an advantage (but not a requirement) if the applicant also has some experience in modeling of Gas systems.
