PhD positions in the INSIGHT project at the IT University of Copenhagen

The IT University of Copenhagen invites candidates for a fully funded PhD position funded by the Danish Independent Research Council in the INSIGHT project – “Program Repair with Static Insights”.

Automatic bug finding is rapidly becoming a core technology in industrial software development. Large companies and key software projects use static code scanners to identify specific problems, colloquially known as bugs. Yet, finding bugs is not the same as fixing them. Bug reports are hard to read, and they often point to a problem manifestation, not to the underlying cause. Fixing requires substantial effort, as bugs are often fixed not in the same program location, where they are detected. As a consequence, programmers often ignore the alarms raised by code scanners. Thus, it is important to make bug reports easily digestible: ideally with a proposal how to fix the defect. This will help to diagnose and fix more bugs effectively.

In the project you will collaborate with the Linux Foundation, developers at Red Hat, and the researchers at CMU in Pittsburgh (the group of prof. Claire Le Goues ) to automatically generate patches for resource manipulation bugs in The Linux Kernel. The ideal candidate will have training in computer science with interest in functional programming, program analysis, machine learning and operating systems. You need to exhibit strong interest in making tools useful for software engineers.

The position is fully-funded. The budget includes full-time researcher salary, health insurance, paid vacation, pension, a budget for taking courses, attending conferences, and project-related travel. When hired you will join the Software Quality Research (SQUARE) Group at IT University, part of our lively and dynamic Computer Science Department (ca. 70 researchers). The position is based in Copenhagen, one of the most attractive European cities to live in.

Qualification Requirements:

• Candidates should have an M.Sc. or B.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in computer science or software engineering which includes courses on programming language technology, test, verification, programming language semantics in machine learning.
• Prior contributions to Linux kernel code, or prior experience with OCaml programming are an advantage but not a requirement.
• High level of oral and written proficiency in English

• Documentation of academic degree(s); grade transcripts that documents outstanding academic achievement;

• Applications may also include one relevant scientific publication written by the applicant, and/or a portfolio of practical work (for instance contributions to open source projects), and/or the applicant's master thesis if relevant. Letters of recommendation can also be included in the application

The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 70 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialisation of IT.

Successful applicants will be employed and enrolled at the ITU University for a period of 3 or 4 years depending on the university degree level of the applicant.

Salary
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
