Are you looking for an exciting role as part of a global team of physicists, engineers and software developers defining the new field of Quantum Computing?

 

Microsoft is researching the future of Quantum Computing, including theory, hardware, and software. As a part of this effort we are developing new UHV-based hardware dedicated for quantum material fabrication. We are on the cusp of an accelerated effort in quantum computing and this position is an opportunity to get in at the start of this new intense phase.

 

We are seeking mechanical and hardware engineers with in-depth experience in designing hardware solutions for UHV systems (such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy) at the Microsoft Quantum Materials Laboratory (MQML), Copenhagen, Denmark, as well as at other Microsoft Quantum sites associated with the Technical University of Delft (Netherlands), and the University of Purdue (USA).  This development will potentially form the basis of quantum computing.

Responsibilities

You will join a teams of researchers, engineers and PhD students/postdocs dedicated to push the state-of-the-art R&D in epitaxy of heterostructures made of dissimilar materials at the nanoscale. You will be responsible for hands-on hardware maintenance, in vacuum hardware upgrades and establish most efficient work protocols for a unique, advanced, multi-chamber custom-designed molecular beam epitaxy cluster tool. You will be experienced in relevant ultra-high vacuum, mechanical, electronic, software, fault resolution and safety specialties necessary for MBE hardware and process. You will work in close relations with vendors and technical support and be able to execute all necessary MBE maintenance and repairs tasks, both autonomously and as part of a group. You will systematically plan and execute and optimize calibrations and growth processes, using design of experiment principles and in-situ characterization/monitoring. You will be able to generate, populate and maintain a complete growth database.

Qualifications

A successful candidate must have:

• M.S. in physics or an engineering discipline
• An in-depth understanding of mechanical design principles
• An in-depth understanding and ultra-high vacuum systems
• Proficiency in CAD and solid modeling
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills
• Strong desire to work in a collaborative international team – periodic travel to other Microsoft Quantum laboratory sites will be required

Preference will be given to candidates with the following additional qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
• First-hand experience with deposition techniques used in UHV systems
• An in-depth understanding of tool fabrication and material behavior under extreme conditions
