DTU Nanotech at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as postdoc in Synthesis of Star Block-Terpolymers. An important manner of achieving nanostructured materials is through the use of self-organizing materials and in particular through the use of block copolymers. Block copolymers can give rise to complex ordered structures which are used at DTU Nanotech to achieve a range of objectives. In this particular project the focus is on the experimental testing of some of the basic mechanism that leads to self-organized order. A recent theoretical study has shown that mixtures of star block terpolymer with two common and one different block (ABC stars mixed with ABD stars) can lead to particularly interesting ordered network structures (Kirkengaard et al., Interface Focus, 2, 602 (2012)). It is the objectives of this position to identify and synthesize a set of ABC and ABD star block terpolymers that will allow the experimental testing of this prediction. The project is conducted in collaboration with the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) at the University of Copenhagen and the project is financed by a grant from the VKR-foundation. Our laboratories have state-of-the-art facilities for polymer synthesis especially using anionic polymerization. Responsibilities and tasks The ideal candidate has a strong background in modern polymer synthetic methods and polymer characterization and a proven track record in design of synthetic pathways for new polymeric materials. Furthermore knowledge and interest in polymer physics and in particular polymer self-organization phenomena is important. The structural part will include small angle scattering methods (SAXS and SANS) and imaging methods (SEM and TEM) and experience within these methods is desirable but not a prerequisite. The post doc will be responsible for the development of relevant synthetic procedures and for coordinating the study of the structure of the materials obtained in collaboration with project partners at NBI. Qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.
