The candidate will be registered for PhD training at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in the department of Systems Biology while employed by UCB Pharma SA on a Marie Curie Innovative Training Network grant (See further details at http://www.echo-systems.eu). The contract period is limited to 36 months. The candidate will be expected to work on research projects focused on Network Reconstruction and in silico Metabolic Models. The candidate will be hosted by UCB Pharma SA in Belgium, but will start with a 10 months training program at DTU. The supervision will be carried out by Mikael Rørdam Andersen at DTU, supported by Laetitia Malphettes at UCB. The position includes a defined training program spanning cell culture, omics, genome-scale metabolic modeling, as well as business development and innovation. The candidate will work in a team environment, collaborating with various process/modelling and analytical scientists across geographies, academia and industry within the eCHO consortium. The successful candidate will utilize knowledge in biochemical and chemical engineering, statistics, modelling, metabolomics and eukaryotic cells metabolism to apply and further develop a genome-scale CHO metabolic model to different CHO cell lines and recombinant protein production processes. The candidate will work with working with data from ‘omics sources, in particular metabolomics, proteomics and/or transcriptomics to further improve her/his model. Throughout her/his research project, the candidate will refine her/his predictions and identify a list of cell line engineering targets for improved recombinant protein production. The candidate will become familiar and evaluate various process control schemes and tools thanks to her/his metabolic model. The candidate will perform mammalian cell culture experiments with mini and bench-scale bioreactors (15mL-10 L), 80L stainless steel bioreactors and associated disc stack centrifuge and CIP, wave bioreactors, spinners and shaker flasks, analytical instruments and high throughput technologies as required by her/his project. The candidate will apply all required GMP and laboratory procedures as applicable in the laboratories in which she/he will be working. The candidate will be responsible for coming up with her/his own research plan proposals, pro-actively discuss these with her/his supervisors and stakeholders and execute her/his research plans within timelines. The candidate will plan her/his own experiments. When required the candidate will involve team members, pro-actively collect feedback on her/his proposed plan and execute such plan. The candidate will generate documentation for her/his experimental reports and write up her/his reports and manuscripts in English as well as present data and conclusions from experiments at department, inter-department, consortium meetings and conferences in English. The function requires the candidate to perform her/his own research independently. The candidate will be willing to make an effort in building a cross-european professional network and motivated by meeting new people and living in other countries. The candidate will actively participate to the good order, maintenance and cleanliness of the laboratory by performing lab responsibilities in a reliable and service-oriented manner. The candidate will be required to be flexible in her/his time arrangements to cater to the demands of the experiments. The candidate will apply the health safety and environment policies and rigorous standards of the laboratories in which she/he is working. The candidate will participate in continuous improvements of Health Safety and Environment (HSE) by conformance checks on laboratory set-up and organization as well as day-to-day standards and procedures in close collaboration with the HSE department.
