PhD scholarship in Planning and Operating Public Transport Services with Autonomous Vehicles

The Transport Modelling Group (TMG) of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Management Engineering, is looking for excellent applicants to pursue PhD studies, starting in January 2019. Our group do methodological research in Quantitative Transport Models for the benefit of the society. The group cover a broad spectrum of modelling competences from mathematical modelling, optimisation, machine learning and demand modelling.

The project is part of a large research project, TUPPAC, with participation of a range of national and international partners (e.g. Nobina, IBM, RUC, etc.). In the project, four autonomous busses will be acquired and operated as part of a test-bed on two locations. Several datasets concerning user preferences and operation characteristics of autonomous buses will be collected and offered to the student. In addition, a front-end app will be developed which will communicate with a back-end server. The methods and algorithms developed throughout the PhD could be integrated with the app and server.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The project aims at analysing and developing mobility solutions for last-mile transport by using autonomous bus services. This will include, but is not limited to, the following tasks; 

• Supply optimisation
  • Develop on-demand adaptive routing and scheduling models for autonomous busses.
  • Establish smart integration with conventional public transport in order to minimise transfer time.
• Demand exploaration
  • Consider the demand for smart mobility solutions in a wider perspective.
  • Identification of viable markets and services based on existing survey data.
• Combined model integration
  • Integration of different MaaS in simulation models for market predictions.
  • Handle uncertainty in demand and supply, for instance by posting expected travel time and a guaranteed maximum travel time.

Qualifications 

• A Master’s degree in operations research, transportation engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or related fields from a recognised university;
• Programming skill (e.g., C++, Java, C#, Python, Matlab, etc.)
• Background in operations research, mathematical modelling, and transportation;
• Good communication skills in English, both written and oral;
• Willingness to engage in group-work a multi-national team and interact with project partners

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
