The Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in 'Optimal planning and operation of hybrid renewable energy systems'.

The project is a joint PhD degree project in collaboration with Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEE, CAS). The PhD student is required to stay at IEE, CAS in Beijing, China, for 9 months to fulfill the requirements of the joint PhD degree. The PhD project is jointly supported by the Sino-Danish Centre for Education and Research (SDC) and Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark.

CEE offers outstanding career opportunities, has very strong relations to the industry and focuses on transforming the electric power system into an intelligent infrastructure based on renewable energy.

The hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) consists of two or more renewable energy resources (RESs) to provide increased system efficiency and greater balance in energy supply. It is becoming popular due to its modular structure, cost efficiency and flexible operation. The project will focus on studying the interactions of multiple RESs, storage systems, electricity and thermal loads, coupling components, and electricity and thermal systems. The aim is to develop optimal planning and operation strategies for the HRES in order to improve the overall cost efficiency and ensure operation security.

Responsibilities and tasks
The HRES has been extensively studied, focusing on the optimal energy planning, real time control, and long-term planning to optimize the cost efficiency, secure operation and long-term investment. Recently, the power to gas (P2G) technology has regained a lot of attention due to its excellent potential to couple different energy sectors, and long-term storage capability. However, the technical and economic feasibility of the P2G technology in the HRES has not been thoroughly studied. Moreover, the interactions between all components and systems in the HRES should be further studied to reveal the coordination mechanism. Furthermore, distributed coordination of multiple HRESs has not been studied yet. At present, the long-term planning of the HRES has not considered the coordinated operation of the HRES.

Therefore, the following research work will be conducted in this project:

• Study interactions of multiple RESs, storage systems, electricity and thermal loads, coupling components, and electricity and thermal systems;
• Develop data driven optimal energy planning for the HRES in order to minimize the energy supply cost with P2G;
• Propose a real time control strategy for the HRES considering the real time deviations and coordination of multiple HESs using robust model predictive control;
• Establish an optimal planning method for the HRES considering the integrated operation strategies.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in electrical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The candidate with the following knowledge will be preferred:

• Fundamental knowledge about the power system operation, control and analysis
• Good knowledge of optimization theory, familiar with one of the optimization software, such as GAMS and Matlab
• Knowledge/experience about integrated energy systems modeling and operation, i.e., the electricity, heat and gas systems
