A PhD scholarship is available in the Nanofluidics and Bioimaging group at the Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology, DTU Nanotech, starting in 2019.

The subject of the PhD project is within 'Lab-on-a-Chip', one of the four main strategic research fields of the department.

The vision for the PhD project is to develop a novel fluorescence microscopy technique for single molecule measurements applied to Life Science. We have previously worked with biologically relevant particles at various scales from single DNA molecules, to chromosomes to single cells. The PhD project is funded by the Novo Nordisk challenge center for Intestinal Absorption and Transport of Biopharmaceuticals headed by Professor Thomas Andresen.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD position offered as a part of the Nanofluidics and Bioimaging group led by Associate Professor Rodolphe Marie.

The PhD candidate will be responsible for driving interdisciplinary experimental research rooted in physics with applications within life sciences. This will imply working with laser optics, fluorescence microscopy, quantitative biophysics measurement of single fluorophores and nanoparticles, possibly micro and nanofluidics.

The project will focus on experimental work with single molecule fluorescence imaging and super resolution microscopy with a view to biophysics measurements.

Image analysis will be done in collaboration with Senior Researcher Kim Mortensen from the Stochastic Signals and Systems group at DTU Nanotech.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in physics or engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree. Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are required. A track record of experimental work is preferred.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Rodolphe Marie, group leader. Final assessment will be on the basis of an interview. A track record in experimental work within physics or material sciences is preferred. Alternatively, a hands-on experience with imaging and image analysis in the context of biology is suitable.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
