DTU Nanotech offers a 3-year PhD position to develop characterization methods for advanced electronic materials used in the semiconductor industry. Harnessing electrical properties of metals and semiconductors in nanoelectronics is key in development and production of semiconductor devices. As the scaling of transistors continue, electrical properties become ever more dependent on the three dimensional geometry of devices. Thus, it becomes of increasing importance to measure electrical properties in test structures that closely resemble actual device geometries. During this PhD project, you will take part in a large European project and work in collaboration with international partners to define the future standards of electrical characterization for the semiconductor industry. You will work on assessment and application development of MEMS based micro electrodes for both front end of line (FEOL) and back end of line (BEOL) metrology. Whereas FEOL metrology requires electrical characterization of semiconductors, e.g. SiGe, III-V and 2D materials, BEOL metrology is applied for characterization of metals and contact resistance in interconnect materials. The metrology applications developed in this project are intended for the 10 nm and 7 nm technology nodes and for integration on a fully automatic platform. Responsibilities and tasks The candidate will be responsible for: •Qualification of advanced reference samples, including performance of Hall effect measurements using a Teslatron or similar. •Assessment of Capres’ microHALL-A300 metrology tool for FEOL and BEOL applications. •Improving measurement precision and reliability. •Development of new metrology applications using micro electrodes. •Dissemination of research results at international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. Qualifications The ideal candidate has a master's degree in electrical engineering or physics. Experience with characterization of semiconductor devices or materials as well as in-depth knowledge on semiconductor fabrication is preferred. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
