The Section for Composites and Materials Mechanics, DTU Wind Energy, is seeking a PhD student for an experimental and modelling study of the composite pultrusion process for manufacturing of pre-fabricated elements for wind turbine blades. The PhD scholarship is part of the OPTI_MADE_BLADE project funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. The project targets the development of design and manufacturing solutions for large (over 70m) offshore wind turbine blades. Offshore wind power holds a very large potential as a green source of energy. However, offshore wind turbines need to raise their cost competitiveness to ensure economic viability. The overall scientific idea in OPTI_MADE_BLADE is to enable a paradigm shift in the design and manufacturing of offshore wind turbine blades, and realize a design-for-manufacturing concept by the use of pre-fabricated elements to reduce cycle time, and ultimately, to reduce the cost of energy. Pultruded high-performance carbon fibre composite profiles will be used as pre-fabricated elements. It is hypothesized that pre-fabricated elements, when consolidated into the blade structure, will lead to optimized materials placement and fibre alignment, and thereby to improved performance of the blade. Job description The aim of the PhD study is to develop experimentally based models for the manufacturing of composite materials by the pultrusion process, covering the process conditions and composite architecture, together with the resulting mechanical properties of the composites. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with Fiberline Composites, one of the industrial partners in OPTI_MADE_BLADE. Fiberline Composites is a world-leading company specialised in pultrusion of composite products, and with a focus on innovative solutions. The improved manufacturing technology for pre-fabricated elements, to be used for wind turbine blades, will be established by developing a new impregnation chamber for the pultrusion process, and by optimising the curing scheme for the resin. Process development work will be done to optimize fibre alignment, fibre wetting, and fibre content, and to reduce residual stresses and porosity in the pultruded composite materials. Specifically, the PhD study will cover the following areas, with focus on both measurements and models: •Polymer chemistry of thermosetting resins. •Cure kinetics of resins. •Manufacturing induced residual stresses, and resulting shape distortions in composites •Composite architecture, e.g. fibre alignment, fibre and porosity content. •Composite mechanical properties, static and dynamic. •Altogether, the PhD study will provide a fundamental research study on composite materials processing and properties, in order to support the related technological developments in the OPTI_MADE_BLADE project. Qualifications Candidates for the PhD study should have a master's degree in engineering, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to: •Knowledge on polymer chemistry, specifically thermosetting resins used for composites. •Experience in the use of thermal analysis techniques, e.g. DSC and DMA. •Experience with development and application of cure kinetic models for composite materials with continuous fibres. •Knowledge on the measurements and modelling of residual stresses in composites. •Knowledge and experience in measurements and modelling of mechanical properties of composites. •Good skills in analysis of experimental data and their use in model validation. •Good collaborative skills. •Ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to industry. •Good English speaking and writing skills.
