PhD scholarship in Multi-scale Turbulence Modeling for CFD Wake Simulations

The research fields that the Aerodynamic Design (AER) section work with are aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, and the research is based on both modeling and experimental methods. On the modeling side, the fidelities range from engineering models to computationally demanding vortex-based and CFD models, facilitating Fluid-Structure-Interaction methods and multidisciplinary design. The tools and knowledge are applied in interaction with the industry in the design process for solving problems and implementing new concepts.

On the experimental side, the Poul la Cour Wind tunnel, the Research Turbine, and the Rotating Test Rig are facilities that offer invaluable feedback for improving both the computational models and implementation of new concepts and thereby boost the impact of our research.

Wakes from wind turbines can cause energy losses in wind farms, and the design of energy-efficient wind farm layouts demands accurate modeling of this variably complex effect. Fast Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods, such as Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solvers, can model wind turbine wake losses accurately if the employed turbulence model is able to handle the relevant turbulence scales. State-of-the-art RANS-based turbulence models used in wind energy applications only treat one or two turbulence scales, while wind energy fluid dynamics is a multi-scale flow problem. For wind turbine wake simulations, effects spanning a wide range of scales larger and smaller than the turbine rotor (e.g. Coriolis forces, complex terrain, and atmospheric stability) can significantly influence wake losses. Hence there is a need to develop a multi-scale turbulence model in RANS to address the collection of relevant effects.

In response to this, DTU Wind Energy is looking for a PhD candidate to engage in the development of a multi-scale turbulence model in RANS for CFD wake simulations.

Responsibilities and tasks


As a PhD candidate you will have a large role in the development of a multi-scale turbulence model in RANS for CFD wake simulations. The main part of your work includes development, implementation and validation of turbulence models. The candidate will work closely together with the participants of a parallel project where such RANS modelling is applied for wind resource assessment.

For the main position, the candidate should have a very good understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamic

The candidate should also have a strong background in applied mathematics, as well as a good foundation in programming with a focus on Python and Fortran languages. Experience with turbulence and atmospheric flows is beneficial.

Qualifications


Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Salary and appointment terms


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years
