This multidisciplinary research project is a collaboration between DTU Nanotech, EIT at Center for Bachelor of Engineering Studies and CFU at DTU Electrical Engineering aiming to develop new ways of optimizing and implementing analog front-end electronics for ultrasonic transducers.
Responsibilities and tasks
Row-column addressed arrays for ultrasonic imaging have recently attracted some attention, as they offer volumetric imaging with a greatly reduced number of connections to the array. Here only the rows or the columns are addressed one at a time, reducing the number of connections in matrix arrays from N2 to N+N. Such arrays have very desirable properties as resolution scales linearly with the number of elements, and very large arrays with a good penetration depth are attainable. The increased size of the elements in the newest arrays, might also offer new ways of implementing the electronics in the probes, as the increased per-element-capacitance makes it possible to use amplifier topologies that are not feasible to use in combination with conventional matrix arrays.
The purpose of this project is to explore and develop new front-end electronics that exploits the reduced number of interconnections in combination with the increased capacitance of the elements, to reduce the heat dissipation in the probes, whilst still retaining a signal to noise ratio comparable to other state-of-the-art scanners.
As there exists no simple relation between the overall noise performance of the system and the achievable SNR in the analog front-end, the project aims to take a holistic approach to the system design where the parameters of the entire signal-chain are optimized with respects to heat dissipation, overall SNR and usability.
The end-goal will be compact and scalable unit comprised of both the analog front-end electronics and CMUT array, which can be easily incorporated into a small ultrasonic probe.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
