PhD scholarship in Integrated Micro Product/Process Quality Assurance in Micro Injection Moulding Production

Department of Mechanical Engineering at DTU, the Technical University of Denmark, has an open PhD position in the field of Precision Micro Injection Moulding of Medical components using Integrated Process/Product Quality Assurance. The project is part of the European MICROMAN Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) developing cutting-edge micro manufacturing research through collaborative activities under the framework programme for research and innovation Horizon 2020 funded by the European Commission. The present research project will be carried out at the Mechanical Engineering department section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP). MPP performs research and teaching in the field of manufacturing engineering. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover manufacturing processes, micro/nano manufacturing, metrology on all scales (macro, meso, micro, nano) as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. Research and teaching is based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes. Responsibilities and tasks It is the goal for the current PhD project to develop the micro manufacturing technology for a new micro polymer component for medical applications. The development and optimization of the Micro Injection Moulding (µIM) process will be achieved by an innovative approach based on a new combination of product micro metrology and in-line process metrology. The project will require the development of necessary manufacturing knowhow enabling industrial mass micro production by micro injection moulding of the micro medical component. The required know-how is identified in the following project objectives: •Implementation of a process-sensitive and representative finger print feature into the micro moulded application product/process design so to make the inspection efficient and effective, at the same time optimizing the quality output and limiting the required inspection effort. •Establishment of the relation between the micro moulded product quality parameters, the finger print quality response, and the µIM processing conditions (both inputs and outputs). •Implementation of a real-time inspection tool in the µIM equipment based on 2D/3D optical microscopy and µIM parameters monitoring. The research will encompass an integration of expertise in a number of different key fields such as process technology and polymer material science, process control and monitoring, statistical process control, dimensional and surface metrology, image processing. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Further qualifications we will emphasize: •Experience in the field of dimensional metrology and measuring technology •Knowledge about statistical quality control methods (e.g. statistical process control, design of experiment) •Knowledge and experience with the injection moulding process •Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group •Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
