DTU Space would like to invite applications for a PhD position starting in May 2019 on the topic of 'Geostatistical Simulation and probabilistic inversion in Geomagnetism', working on the CoreSat project funded by the European Research Council. The position will be based in the Division of Geomagnetism whose research focuses on exploring the Earth and its environment using its magnetic field.

The CoreSat project involves making use of satellite magnetic data, collected by ESA's Swarm mission, to probe the processes in Earth's core responsible for the present weakening of the Earth's magnetic field. This PhD position focuses on developing and applying new techniques, based on geostatistical methods and probabilistic inversion, to better separate the signature of core and lithospheric sources in satellite measurements of the geomagnetic field.

Responsibilities and tasks


The aim of this position is to develop, test, and apply new computational schemes for separating geophysical sources in magnetic satellite data. This will involve employing geostatistical simulation tools, adapting these to spherical geometry and making use of prior information on the magnetization of the lithosphere and the core geodynamo process within a probabilistic inversion framework. The work will involve writing, testing and optimizing software that generates samples from prior probability distributions based available training information, and carrying out probabilistic inversion using this based on satellite magnetic field measurements. You will:

• Be responsible for developing and testing a new open-source geostatistical modelling and probabilistic inversion scheme in spherical geometry
• Rigorously test and optimize the software for use on a high performance computational cluster
• Contribute to new approaches for exploiting prior information in solid Earth geophysics, based on training images
• Apply the developed scheme to magnetic field data collected by ESA's Swarm satellites
• Publish abstractJV_descriptions of the new modelling technique, and the results of its application to satellite magnetic data, in the international peer reviewed literature
• Present your research at international conferences
• Communicate effectively with colleagues and be able to work as part of a team to achieve ambitious goals
• Your research will involve studies of planetary scale tectonics and the geodynamo process.

An important part of the work will be to collaborate closely with international partners at University of Kentucky (USA) and NASA who are experts on lithospheric magnetization. The candidate will be expected to travel to the US for meetings and extended research visits.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree e.g. a master's degree in geophysics, Space physics, or computer science.

Salary and appointment terms


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

Minimum salary is 50,000? per year including pension and the scholarship includes funding for travel and IT.
