PhD scholarship in Advanced Design Methods for Active Distribution Networks

The Center for Electric Power and Energy at the Department of Electrical Engineering is looking for a PhD student for a 3-year scholarship in the field of advanced design methods for active distribution networks. The position is funded by the project “EnergyLab Nordhavn” that aims at utilizing the Danish metropolitan area Nordhavn as a live laboratory for future smart-energy technologies, innovative business models and new operational solutions on all scales - components, buildings, grid infrastructures and system level - and provide basis for design and dimensioning of the energy infrastructure of future sustainable dense low-energy cities. Responsibilities and tasks The selected candidate will participate in a project team of DTU researchers and utility engineers of “EnergyLab Nordhavn” that aims at exploring new design methods for urban power distribution infrastructure. The new design methods will be investigated based on the state-of-the-art grid design experience for the metropolitan areas, taking Copenhagen as an example. The proposed design methods will be to be developed in view of future stochastic load scenarios, optimal network topology and active network management, emerging distribution system-related operational add-ons such as flexibility-based network services, utility-sized battery applications etc. The design methods will be part of an analysis and design framework that consider multi-scenario, multi-objective, multi-phase and introduction of new criteria (such as changes from deterministic to probabilistic, from sufficiency of network capacity to network flexibility) In addition, the new suggestions will be applied to the distribution network design cases for Nordhavn (i.e., 10KV & below) and will be compared with the present design from both technical and economic perspectives. The candidate is thus expected to contribute to •An overview of present design principle with identification of its shortcomings. •New design methods for active distribution networks in urban area with technical and economical assessment. •A general analysis and design framework for active distribution network design with case-studies. •Recommendations on the design of electrical networks in Nordhavn. The suitable candidate should have a strong background in power engineering, distribution networks and mathematical modelling. Qualifications Candidates should have an MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering. Approval and Enrolment PhD scholarships are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general PhD programmes of DTU.
