The National Food Institute (DTU Food) invites applications for a PhD position in vitamins and analytical chemistry. The successful applicant will be based in the research group for Bioactives – analysis and applications, Division of Food Production. The research group combines expertise in quantitative analytical chemistry with food chemistry, nutrition and technology. Our research on vitamins aims at investigating the content of specific active compounds, the metabolism and effect of the vitamins in human, and animal, and for finding innovative solutions for producing nutritionally enriched food products. The PhD project will focus on analytical challenges and possibilities to enhancing folate and vitamin B12 in specific food products. The PhD student will interact with other students and post docs in the division challenging the field of analytical chemistry, quantifying compounds in our foods by advanced mass spectrometric techniques. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD study will focus on development of methods for quantitative measurement of folate and vitamin B12 metabolites in food using advanced mass spectrometric techniques, and applying these methods on foods in order to investigate potential biofortification strategies for future food products. The proposed project will provide new knowledge on content of specific vitamers, the nutritional value of food products, and how to produce biofortified products to increase dietary intake of folate and vitamin B12 in vulnerable groups e.g. elderly. Qualifications The expected candidate is a motivated scientist with relevant experience from master study. Ideally, you have a master in analytical chemistry interest in food science/technology or vice versa. Furthermore the ideal candidate has: •experience with LC-MS/MS •good laboratory skills •good collaboration and communication skills (written and oral English) •structured and analytical working approach Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
