Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD Fellowship in Cattle Herd Health Management to commence on 1st of December 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to three years.

Background
Modern consumers and society have increasing focus on prudent use of antibiotics. The challenge of antimicrobial resistance is in the agenda of the public debate. Research in reduction of antibiotic usage in Danish cattle herds needs to consider a broad spectrum of disciplines and concerns – including aspects of clinical decision making and motivation to change attitude among farmers and veterinarian together with practical implementation of preventive management practices and effect evaluation hereof.
The role of the veterinarian is central as the person that prescribes the antibiotics and has a position to, potentially, motivate towards prudent usage. The scene is set for introducing evidence-based veterinary advisory services as a trans-disciplinary effort of combining sociological and epidemiological principles.

Project abstractJV_description
A key aim of the project is to explore the motivation for – and barriers towards – changes in antibiotic usage for herd health management in current practices among both organic and conventional farmers as well as among veterinarians. The next step is to explore, exemplify and describe methods to motivate and thus to implement various strategies for antibiotic reduction primarily in conventional herds. Finally, the implementation of strategies is evaluated – both quantitatively at herd level and qualitatively among individual participants and on farm level.
The scientific methodologies in the study will rely on several scientific disciplines to ensure a wide understanding of the complexity of dairy herd health management – from animal, to data, to humans. The study will focus on udder and lung health as the primary disease case

Required qualifications

• A master’s degree in veterinary medicine or similar
• High motivation and basic scientific skills are essential
• Good communication skills both oral and written, including English usage
• Good collaborating skills are essential
• Driving license
• Must be able to understand and speak Danish (or another Scandinavian language) due to a large focus on sociological aspects and potential interviews of farmers and farm staff

Formal requirements
The position is available for a 3-year period for applicants holding a relevant master´s degree.
The successful candidate will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences. Employment as a PhD fellow will be conditional on successful enrolment in the PhD programme according to the rules stipulated in “Bekendtgørelse nr. 18 af 14. januar 2008 om ph.d.-graden.“

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around DKK 25.759 (ca. 3.434 EUR) plus pension. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).

The further process
