Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Geology commencing 1 July 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The Section of Geology is part of the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and is located on Øster Voldgade 10 in the central part of Copenhagen. The successful applicant will be working daily in the Research group of Geochemical, Mineralogical and Petrological Earth Science, which includes analytical facilities such as EMPA, ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS, and several TIMS instruments.

Project abstractJV_description
The research project will investigate Archaean rocks from SW Greenland using petrographical and geochemical methods at the University of Copenhagen. However, an important component of the project consists of a mandatory 6-month research stay at the University of Alberta for measurement of Pt-Os isotopes. The research will investigate the petrogenesis of peridotites and chromitites, with the aim of determining their exact age and geodynamic formation environment.

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

• To manage and carry through your research project
• Attend PhD courses
• Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
• Teach and disseminate your research
• To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
• Work for the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Geology or Geochemistry with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

This project is within the fields of petrology and geochemistry and will study the oldest rocks found in Greenland using various isotope systems including Pt-Os and Lu-Hf. Fieldwork in remote areas of Greenland is a mandatory part of this study, and therefore it is a requirement to have previous field/camping experience preferably in an arctic climate for safety reasons. A background in igneous geochemistry and petrology, as well as a strong working knowledge of the use of SEM and/or EMPA is mandatory. Additionally, the candidate should have analytical skills using MC-ICP-MS and/or LA-ICP-MS, as well as significant routine in chromatographic element separation/geochemical lab procedures relevant for the Lu-Hf isotope system. Previous experience with the development of new protocols for LA-ICP-MS analysis is consider highly advantageous for this position.

This position requires a 6-month change of research environment, which will take place at the University of Alberta, Canada. Previous clean lab experience is therefore considered essential.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 312.879 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.219). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
