The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for two PhD positions; one in 4D seismics and one in sedimentological reservoir characterization of the Chalk Group in the Danish North Sea. DHRTC (also called Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU) is established by the Danish Underground Consortium and DTU. The centre has received a starting grant of DKK 1 billion for a 10-year period and relies on close interaction between Academia and industry. As part of the National Strategy on Oil and Gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to enable increased recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. The goal will be achieved by cooperation with the industry and other research institutions to further progress knowledge and solutions with application potential, and by contributing to research-based teaching programs. A clear objective of the DHRTC is to identify and create confidence in ideas that can radically improve recovery from the Danish North Sea. It is believed that such ideas are typically cross-disciplinary in nature and that the ideas are typically created in a dialogue where insight in existing fields and technologies meets knowledge of new technologies. The Centre is now seeking two PhD scholars who have the ambition and expertise to contribute in shaping the Centre. Responsibilities and tasks PhD I: 4D seismic analysis This study aims to get a better understanding of the 4D seismic signals and the derived changes in oil/water saturation in a specific chalk field in the Danish North Sea to better evaluate the flooding efficiency in the reservoirs. 4D data can be used as an indicator for fracture enhanced areas and a project goal will be to compare the 4D signal to fracture predictions done within other studies at the centre. The project will have a close interaction with PhD II in sedimentological reservoir characterization and together the projects will add to our understanding of how depletion and injection affect the seismic response of the chalk. PhD II: Sedimentological reservoir characterization This study aims at obtaining an improved understanding of hydrocarbon production efficiency and the effects of production on reservoir properties. The project will be based on detailed analyses of pre- and post-production drill cores and petrophysical data from the Chalk Group of a specific field in the Danish North Sea. Cores will be subject to a lithological/sedimentological/fracture analyses which will be integrated with reservoir property data (conventional and microtextural), saturations, and rock mechanical/physics data. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with PhD I, industry partners and the multidisciplinary team of researchers at DHRTC. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in geology, geophysics or petroleum geology or a degree with an equivalent academic level. Good knowledge of seismic data and rock physics is a fundamental requirement for PhD I. Good knowledge of sedimentology and basin geology is a fundamental requirement for PhD II. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
