The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas - DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for a researcher position in advanced analysis of crude oil by chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Centre for Oil and Gas - DTU is established by the Danish Underground Consortium and DTU. As part of a national strategy on oil and gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to improve recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

Responsibilities and tasks


The position will be an integrated part of the fluid characterization work ongoing at DHRTC which focuses on targeted and non-targeted analysis of petroleum fluids by chromatography and mass spectrometry and water analysis. The candidate is expected work with the team to perform innovative, fundamental, and applied research on:

• Chemical analysis of crude oil samples and petroleum fluids
• Investigation of biodegradation of crude oil, bio-surfactants and biomarkers
• Tracer studies of recovery process experiments performed on rock samples
• Characterization and quantification of polar compounds in crude oil by advanced methods

A molecular characterization of the crude oil constituents provides the link between well-established models for mixtures of simple molecules and improved models for reservoir fluids that consist of many complex components and ill-defined fractions. The characterization will be based on modern analytical methods, mainly advanced gas and liquid chromatography and high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS, GCxGC-MS and LC-HR-MS) and sample preparation and extraction techniques. Other methods available for petroleum analysis include FTIR, Raman, ICP-OES and NMR. The candidate will work on 1) separation and analysis of fractions from crude oil and 2) applying the developed workflows to chemical characterization of recovery experiments carried out in the recovery processes team.

The candidate should work on setting up and developing analytical workflows tailored for characterizing the composition of North Sea Crude oil samples with various specific targets. Co-supervising of Ph.D./MSc students working with fluid characterization and analytical chemistry and collaboration with other researchers and students working with advanced water flooding experiments is required. The candidate will participate in a growing cross-disciplinary research program, involving several researchers at DTU and other Danish universities, research institutes, and industry. The team will have access to unique field and laboratory data sets and samples to test concepts and methods developed at the centre.

Application potential

The line-of-sight application potential of this position is to assist the screening processes of potential water based recovery methods in the Danish North Sea oil fields.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. Further required qualifications:

• Excellent skills in advanced analytical chemistry, chromatography and two-dimensional chromatography and HRMS techniques
• Exceptional skills in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry
• Experience with programming in analytical/scientific software and knowledge of electronic laboratory notebooks.
• Experience with advanced analytical equipment and maintenance thereof.
• Good knowledge of the chemical aspects of enhanced oil recovery
• Knowledge of other analytical techniques including spectroscopy, NMR and X-ray diffraction is a strong advantage
• Minimum 2 years of postdoctoral experience and excellent scientific achievements
• Excellent English written and spoken

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The position as researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment. Located at The Technical University of Denmark research groups at the University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, Aalborg University and the Geological Survey of Greenland and Denmark will be affiliated with the Centre. When fully operational, the centre will employ and engage more than 100 people.
