Postdoc Position in Biotechnology: Unravelling the Molecular Secret of Insect's Construction Work

A 2-year full-time postdoc position in biotechnology and protein research focusing on identification and characterization of extracellular proteins with unique bonding properties from insects is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, University of Southern Denmark. The department offers a stimulating research environment with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The position is available starting 1st of April 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

A number of insect species are able to build complex nests from different materials, but the molecular secret of their construction work remains unknown. In the current project, the protein composition of insects´ “glue substance” will be investigated and specific proteins will be isolated, identified and characterized on the structural-functional level. Some of these proteins could be used to make the production of construction materials more environmentally friendly, which would have a huge environmental impact. The project has received financial support as part of The VILLUM Experiment Programme funded by the VILLUM FONDEN. 

The activities in the postdoc project include:

• Extraction and purification of specific extracellular proteins
• Protein identification and molecular cloning
• Bioinformatics including multiple sequence alignments and phylogenetic analyses
• Expression and purification of heterologous proteins
• Structural and functional characterization of extracellular proteins

The starting date is 1st of April 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Application deadline is 15th of January 2019.

Qualification requirements:
The applicant must have a PhD degree in Science or Engineering within biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related topic. Experience within extracellular protein research, protein purification, molecular cloning, bioinformatics, protein characterization, and mass spectrometry will be advantageous. The candidate is expected to be highly motivated, reliable and should be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with other researcher. The successful applicant should have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. In addition, he/she must be willing to co-supervise bachelor and master students associated with the project.

Requirements for the position
Employment as a postdoc requires scientific qualifications at PhD level.

If special circumstances exist employment may be extended for up to one year.

Applications will be assessed by an expert. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty.

Shortlisting may be used. Shortlisted applicants will be assessed by an expert.
 
An interview might be part of the assessment process.

Conditions of employment
Employment as a postdoc is temporary. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

Research will be predominant in the position. Teaching assignments can be agreed individually. Furthermore, other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree.

The Faculty determines the distribution of the various assignments. The weighting of the different assignments may vary over time.
