Post-doctoral researcher on Mackerel Biology and Assessment

Applications are invited for a 2-year position as postdoc with emphasis on research and advice in relation to North Atlantic mackerel. 

The researcher will join the group of researchers working in the cross field between biological research and stock assessment at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark. The group focuses on interdisciplinary research and application of research results in relation to fish stock assessment and advice, an area where we plan for future increase in permanent positions.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position includes research, stakeholder collaboration, advisory tasks and survey participation. 
The research focus is on mackerel (Scomber scombrus) in the North Sea. Spatial patterns in length-at-age, maturity, and consumption of other commercial species will be key elements of the research project. Data from a mackerel survey in July will play a key role in the analyses, but also information from the literature, fishery and international scientific surveys in the area will be used. 
Stakeholder collaboration, advisory work and survey participation include preparation and participation in ICES WGWIDE meetings, ICES WGIPS, ad hoc ICES meetings (c. 3-4 weeks per year), meetings with representatives from the fishery, NGOs and managers, and participation in a 3-week survey in July on board a commercial fishing vessel. 

Additional tasks include the development of new research and management projects, including project applications and publication of results in peer reviewed scientific journals, popular journals and technical reports, as well as provision of advice to the Ministry of foreign affairs of Denmark. 
We are looking for a person that can work independently as well as in teams, preferably a biologist with skills in scientific writing, R-programming, and statistical modelling. Knowledge about mackerel or experience with ICES related work is considered an asset but not a requirement.

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a PhD degree or equivalent, with a strong background in quantitative fish or fisheries science and applied statistics and be able to communicate in English and Scandinavian to audiences at all levels.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, particular consideration will be given to:

• Experience with R-programming and statistical modelling and data analysis
• Knowledge about pelagic fish biology
• Experience with working in research projects
• The ability to communicate in English as well as a Scandinavian language
• Ability to communicate effectively with non-scientists
• Research potential, including experience with publication in scientific journals
• Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas and projects
• Ability to work conscientiously in a team as well as independently

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
