PhD Student positions in game analysis for the project MSG – Making Sense of Games

The IT University of Copenhagen invites highly motivated individuals to apply for one or more PhD positions in humanistic game analysis starting 31st December 2018 or soon thereafter.

The three-year PhD positions are connected to the five-year ERC-funded (AdvG) project MSG – Making Sense of Games, at the Center for Computer Game Research at the IT University of Copenhagen. The successful candidate(s) will work as part of a dedicated team (PI Espen Aarseth, 5-6 PhD students, two post docs) to create a theoretical platform for game analysis. The positions’ main task is to participate in the core project activities of developing analytical concepts, models and best practices for game analysis, building on, testing and improving the MSG project’s theoretical and analytical platform, as well as building on general theories from game studies and the humanities, e.g., game ontology, semiotics, narratology or similar. The positions’ goal is to complete a PhD dissertation in game analysis, and collaborate with the other MSG team members towards the overall project goals.

Qualification Requirements:

• The candidate should have a two-year MA degree (or equivalent) in a field such as literature, aesthetics, media and communication, game studies, or other cognate areas. Documented bachelor- or master-level training (e.g. course abstractJV_descriptions and grade transcripts) in one or more of these fields is a must. Ideal candidates should document previous experience in game studies
• Candidates should have a high level of oral and written proficiency in English
• Candidates who can document research skills (peer-reviewed articles or papers) in game studies and/or humanistic cultural/media studies will be prioritized

• A statement of purpose, which includes a project abstractJV_description for the PhD project, providing evidence of independent thinking, novelty and originality, and a state-of-the-art grasp of the relevant research tradition(s) matching the project abstractJV_description. This text should be maximum 5 standard pages long, excluding references (ca. 2400 characters per page, including spaces and notes).
• Documentation of academic degree(s); grade transcripts that documents outstanding academic achievement, especially for relevant courses (e.g. in game studies and/or other methodologies drawn on in the project abstractJV_description)
• Curriculum Vitae, which must include two professional/academic references
• Applications may also include a relevant scientific publication written by the applicant or the applicant's master thesis. Letters of recommendation can also be included in the application

General information
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 70 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.

The Center for Computer Game Research at the IT University of Copenhagen, founded in 2003, is a world-leading hub for interdisciplinary games research, and currently houses around 24 researchers. It is home to the Game Studies research journal and a masters’ program in games, with a focus on game technology, design, and theory.

Successful applicants will be employed and enrolled at the ITU University for a period of 3 years, and are expected to relocate to Copenhagen for that same period.

Salary
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
