PhD scholarship: Theory, Modeling, and Design of All-Polymer Acoustofluidic Chips

A 3-year PhD scholarship, starting between March and June 2019, is available in the Department of Physics in the field of theoretical acoustofluidics supervised by Prof. Henrik Bruus. http://www.staff.dtu.dk/bruus

We study the fundamental physics of fluids and solid mechanics under external forcing, such as ultrasound, at the micro- and nanometer scale, and we perform numerical simulations of selected systems often in international collaborations with various experimental groups. Our main focus is basic research but we also encourage and support collaboration with industry partners. The scholarship are part of the research project "Theory, modeling, and design of all-polymer acoustofluidic chips" funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF-FTP) and in collaboration with the Swedish company AcouSort (http://www.acousort.com). The main research is to study theoretically the fundamental physical implications of applying our novel whole-system-resonance principle on microscale acoustofluidic systems, Moiseyenko and Bruus, Phys. Rev. Appl. 11, 014014 (2019) 1-14 [pdf], and to explore its potential for designing efficient all-polymer acoustofluidic devices. Responsibilities and tasks You will be responsible for

• studying the basic theory of acoustofluidics in all-polymer devices,
• performing numerical modeling of acoustofluidics in all-polymer devices,
• designing optimal polymer-based devices for acoustophoretic handling cells,

We expect that you

• create and critically validate acoustofluidics models relevant for your research project,
• deliver theoretical and modeling results of high quality,
• participate in team work with independent and original theory/modeling contributions,
• collaborate effectively with experimentalists at our partner company AcouSort,
• are excited to teach and to learn from other group members,
• communicate your insights and results effectively both orally and in writing,
• work with an outstanding drive and enthusiasm.
• have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
