PhD scholarship in Value of Information and Risk Based Inspection Planning

The project will be carried out at the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU). As part of the National Strategy on Oil and Gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to enable increased recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. As a part of this strategy, the Centre wants to undertake research to increase the structural integrity of existing offshore structures and at the same time to reduce maintenance cost. The Centre is therefore carrying out investigations on: Value of information (VoI) analysis utilized as a methodical platform for quantifying the value of the various types of relevant information which might be collected for the modelling of the reliability and safety of offshore facilities. Responsibilities and tasks The overall objective is to reduce the service life costs of offshore facilities with due consideration to adequate risks to personnel and environment. Particular emphasis shall be directed on VoI as a means of targeting refinements of structural response modelling through monitoring in general and e.g. operational modal analysis in particular for the purpose of optimizing risk based inspection planning for the assets integrity management with respect to accumulated fatigue damages. To this end, existing generic inspection planning techniques shall be utilized and further developed to consistently accommodate for updating based on load environment and response model refinements as well as for representing system effects between hot spots both with respect to condition updating through inspection results but also with respect to the structural system reliability and risk. The project shall interact with the other projects – especially the experimental project – to secure that value of experimental plans are evaluated Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
