The Department of Environmental Engineering (DTU Environment) researches in green technology, sustainable development, decision support, risk assessment, urban infrastructure, and climate adaptation – with a focus on water, resources, chemicals and environmental technology. We aim to increase our understanding of environmental and resource problems in order to develop technologies and management methods that lead to a sustainable society, both in Denmark and internationally. A PhD position is available in the Water Resources Engineering section of the Department, where research is conducted on a broad range of technical science based tools for the management, protection and treatment of fresh surface- and ground-water systems. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD project is a collaboration between DTU and EPFL in Switzerland and involves the development of mathematical models of microbial community evolution for describing the biodegradation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater resources. The project will investigate microbial degradation models employed in other fields (e.g. waste water management) to find new approaches to simulating microbial degradation processes of chlorinated solvents. The models will be tested against currently available data and new experimental data collected by the PhD during the project. The successful applicant will develop new models, collect existing experimental data on chlorinated solvent degradation, run experiments to collect new data, and test the models against the data. The PhD scholarship is funded by DTU and the Department of Environmental Engineering with the aim of strengthening research collaboration between DTU and EPFL. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The candidate should have a strong background in mathematical modelling, numerical methods, microbiology, should be comfortable working in the laboratory, and be able to work in a multidisciplinary environment. The candidate must have a high level of communication skills. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
