The Radiation Physics Division, DTU Nutech, is seeking a candidate for a PhD position to develop ionizing radiation dosimetry suitable for use in the strong magenetic field of medical linear accelerators with online MR-image guidance.

The Radiation Physics Division carries out research, innovation and research-based consultancy in the fields of dosimetry, luminescence physics, and neutronics, with applications in geological and archaeological dating, radiation therapy and diagnostics, radiation processing, reactor physics and nuclear emergency preparedness.

The division presently consists of approx. 40 people including researchers, technicians and PhD students.

Background

Radiotherapy based on online magnetic resonance (MR) image guidance has recently become commercially available and the clicical implementation is in progress worldwide. An expected benefit of this new treatment technique is the ability to perform online (fast) adaptation to tumor movements by gating or by changing the beam collimation. However, it is unclear how such treatments can best be carried out, and how well the technology performs. The overall objective of this PhD therefore is to develop novel tools that can help solve this problem.

Job abstractJV_description

The objective of this PhD project is to develop a time-resolved dosimetry system, for example, based on luminescence detectors coupled to optical fibers. The system will be used to characterize the ability of MR linacs to deliver an accurate dose to a moving phantom target that can be imaged in an MR linac. The presentence of the strong magnetic field (larger than 0.3 T) is a significant challenge for such measurements as the magnetic field affects the electron transport and dose deposition in the detector. The work will include Monte Carlo modelling of radiation transport. The development work will be carried out at DTU Nutech's state-of-the-art radiation facilities in a close collaboration with the University Hospitals in Herlev and Copenhagen/Rigshospitalet) that operates two state-of-the-art ViewRay MR linacs.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a master's degree or an equivalent degree in engineering or physics with an interest for radiation physics and medical applications of ionizing radiation.

Salary and terms of employment
